Eric and Kellen made a high school crush into a lifetime with each other – 11 years and some months ago, these two started on an incredible journey together that would take them through high school, undergrad, grad school, med school, several cities apart and finally back together in Chicago, where they would (finally) be engaged. I have known Kellen since our early years on the soccer field, and was absolutely thrilled when she reached out to me to photograph her wedding day! As we emailed and chatted about everything wedding I was in awe of how much she planned to do herself – talk about an incredible DIY Bride! The flowers, the table linens, the place cards, the chalkboard signs, the list goes on. And on. All while planning from Chicago, in Residency with the craziest hours – this girl is superwoman.

Fast forward to their wedding day – I drove up from Duluth in complete sunshine until I hit Lutsen. “Not to fear!” I told the ladies – “overcast is great, lets just keep that rain away!” And then it rained. And stopped, just enough for us to get the most gorgeous photos by Lake Superior. And then it rained again. We headed up the mountain via gondola, crossing our fingers for some no-rain photos with a jaw dropping backdrop. And then it rained. It rained really hard. And the skies got black. The wind decided to get crazy. I literally watched the outdoor ceremony arch fly off the chateau deck and the power couldn’t decide if it wanted to be on or off. Guests were being shuttled up the mountain in a van and the entire time, Kellen sat calm and relaxed with her bridesmaids, hidden away. Both Eric and Kellen were so focused on getting married, enjoying the day with their friends and family, that they didn’t care. It was the most incredible feeling in that room.

When all was said and done, the ceremony was moved inside and the two said “I Do” surrounded by all of their loved ones, filled to the brim with excitement, love and complete happiness for the new Mr & Mrs. It was beautiful.

The weather never improved, but it didn’t matter. Nothing could stop these two from making a crazy weather day into the perfect wedding day. Hail, rain, wind, lightening, power outages, gondolas shutting down – at the end of the day, they were married. And that is all that mattered.

Cheers to the newlyweds – may you have a lifetime together filled with love, happiness, and many more eventful stories together! xo, AJC
